Pioneer Sondre Norheim, from Telemark, has often been called the father of modern skiing for inventing the equipment and techniques that led to modern skiing as we see it today. However, originally skis were used as a practical item, used primarily for travel in a climate that received an abundance of snow.

The first hints to the existence of skis are on Cave and rock drawings discovered in 1933 in Norway which depict a man on skis holding a stick. During this time, however, skiing was not used as a sport but for survival. The oldest skis were found in Norway, where it’s believed that the first skiers tied bones of large animals to their boots with leather straps.  Short skis were found in Sweden, believed to be the oldest skis, which date back to 4500 years old.

As time progressed, people in the Telemark area in Norway began to develop skiing as a finer art.  In the early 1700’s, these people began to use skis to make downhill descents, and they were fond of making jumps.  This was the beginning of skiing as we know it today.  The jumps and downhill descents became known as the Nordic style.

The development of modern skiing as we know it was making strides in 1850 Sondre Norheim.  He created skis by typing twisted wet birch roots to his boots, and waited until the roots dried.  These bindings allowed for better control than the old leather straps, and now it was possible to make new turning motions.  Soon afterwards, in 1896, and Austrian named Mathias Zdarsky from Austria demonstrated the skill of pushing one ski at an angle to control speed.  Another Austrian, Hannes Schneider, continued to refine these skills in the early 1900s and started the first formal Method of Ski Instruction (frequently known as the Arlberg technique).  Because of the new developments, and the change in style, this new form of skiing became known as Alpine Skiing.

Around this time, Skiing was changing into a competitive sport. The first known civilian ski race took place in Tromso, Norway in 1843. Also in 1888, the Norwegian Fridtjof Nansen made the first crossing of Greenland, travelling from East to West on skis. The report on his expedition, was published in 1890 in both Norwegian and English, and later in German. It aroused great interest in skiing in Europe and the United States, as well as creating a Norwegian national hero. From then on skiing was regularly in the news, and was soon adopted as a pastime and a sport by the wealthier classes of Europe,

In 1921, the first slalom race was held in Switzerland, and Alpine Skiing events were added to the Winter Olympics in 1936.  During this time, skiing was becoming a popular pastime activity in Europe.  Around this time, a ski lift was invented, which contributed to the popularity.  Ski resorts were opened after World War II in Austria and Switzerland.

Skiing has continued to grow in popularity and is very much a popular activity for kids with skiwear brands developing ranges of children’s ski clothing to meet demand.  In less than one hundred years, there are choices of popular ski resorts world-wide.  Different schools of thought about different methods exist, but meanwhile ski manufacturers are refining their products for the ever-evolving sport, making it faster, safer, and more navigable to race down the hills.  You can find a wealth of information on skiing, and it has turned into such a popular sport that you can watch it on TV for the competitions from people around the world. Skiing should continue to grow in popularity as travel becomes more possible for the masses, and it is fast becoming a more accessible sport for the middle class.

As a sport or a hobby, Mountain Biking can be split into 9 different categories.

These categories are very versed in what they offer. They are:

1. BMX
BMX is a style where the bikes offer 20 inch wheels. These bikes are commonly used at skate parks or with dirt jumps. Because of their smaller wheels and shorter wheel bases, BMX bikes are much easier to perform tricks and stunts with.

2. Cross country
This type of mountain biking involves riding your bike up and down hills. Although it’s the least extreme form of mountain biking, most cross country riders are very fit and go on long rides.

3. Cyclo cross
This is a cross between road and mountain biking. These riders have to go over obstacles, cross through rivers, and race on and off the course.

4. Dirt jumping
Dirt jumping involves jumping the bike over large man made dirt jumps then doing tricks while they are in the air. These jumps are normally close together so riders can go over six or more jumps in one run, gaining a flow to give them more speed for bigger jumps.

5. Downhill
Downhill mountain biking involves racing downhill as fast as possible. This type of riding is very intense and extreme, offering riders the chance for ultimate thrills and excitement.

6. Freeride
Free riding involves finding the perfect line down the mountain using all of the terrain to express yourself. These competitions are very popular, as riders can express themselves any way they see fit.

7. Single speed
Not to be confused with fixed gears, this is a form of cross country biking that’s done using a bike with only one gear and fewer components. The idea with single speed is simplicity. The straight chain line will provide efficient pedaling, and the lack of components mean less mechanical problems and a lighter bike.

8. Street and urban
This type of riding involves riding in urban areas, ledges, and other types of man made obstacles. Riders of street and urban biking will do tricks as well, such as stalls and grinds.

9. Trails
Trials are considered an aspect of mountain biking, although the bikes used look nothing like mountain bikes. They use 20 or 26 inch wheels and sport small, low frames. Trail riders will hop and jump their bikes over obstacles, which requires an extreme amount of balance and concentration.

There are different types of hunting equipment for emergency situations. It includes high quality rifles or hunting weapons, first- aid box, knife and saw, a loud whistle, long rope, cell phones, shelter blankets, marker tapes, plastic bags and adequate food and water. If all these hunting equipment are not carried then the hunting task may prove to be harsh. Another versatile machine used while hunting is ATV’s. Most of the ATV’s have large bodies to store all the hunting equipment. The ATV machine is used because the hunters have to pass through various unpleasant environments which come in the way of hunting.

Hunting can also become a dangerous recreational activity so a hunting weapon should be well-equipped and easy to handle. As it is the most essential hunting equipment, is safety and sound features are important. The hunters should know how to use their weapons and should be fully loaded to avoid panic in the emergency. The best hunting equipment and weapon include new rifles, rifle cases, powder, archery target, hunting arrows, etc. If the person is traveling alone for the hunting activity, a walkie-talkie or a cell phone is a must to contact somebody in the emergency situation. Hunting areas are usually surrounded with bushes and trees, so a marker tape can be used to track back if the hunter is lost. Hunting might go for many days, so adequate food and enough water can sustain the hunter for a long time. Since accidents, either minor or major, are most common during hunting, the hunter should carry handy first-aid boxes or medical kits as it provides immediate medical care.

A right kind of clothing is vital during the hunt as it gives complete protection against various weather conditions. The hunter should ensure bright clothing so that other hunters can differentia them from wildlife. Insects and poisonous plants are usual in Hunting areas, so the hunters should have enough shelter blankets or clothes. Hunting equipment like life jackets, maps, flashlights, etc. are important while handling emergency situation. A full body hunting harness is the safe hunting equipment for many hunters. A hunting harness can save the life of the hunter if he/she has fallen asleep during the course of hunting.

Like catching plenty of fish and can’t get a baby sitter?  Try Ice fishing with a child. It does require a certain amount of patience but with the right mind set and a few simple tips, chances are it will be a great success.

No doubt, it does require some work but the rewards in return will be worth it. Imagine the look on a 5 year olds face when they reel in their first fish. It is priceless! Or imagine your 7 year old at school showing off the picture of his 10” long Crappie and him telling his little friends about the great time he had with his Mom and/or Dad.

That is just the beginning of the art of telling fish stories. Trust me, even at the young age of 7, this ability comes naturally. The fish story gets better each time it is told and the fish seems to get a bit bigger and the fight a little tougher. And that is how fish stories should be.

There are several important tips to help make a fishing trip with a child a success.

1. Keep it interesting. Catching fish is the ultimate goal so I suggest starting out with fishing for Crappies or Bluegills. In most cases, the chances of catching something – anything- are much greater with these species than say -Walleye or Northern. Eventually, you will be able to graduate to larger species that require more technique and patience.

For beginners, quantity seems to matter much more than size. Give the child age appropriate jobs. For example, helping mark where the hole will be drilled, cleaning ice out of the holes after drilling or scooping minnows from the minnow bucket.

Keep rules and instructions short and simple. Nothing deters interest faster than long explanations and constant nagging.

Set realistic time goals. For example, 1- 2 hrs. of actual fishing time is about as good at it can be expected for first few trips. Don’t be discouraged, the time span grows with age and experience.

The key is to make the first ice fishing trips memorable and positive. Hopefully, fun will be an element and they will be begging to go again.

2. Snacks. Don’t ever leave home without them!

Many a fishing trips have been saved by a snack during a slow period. I can fish all day without eating but children seem to get hungry, cranky and tired. It is amazing how a little food enhances the attitude and mood of a child. Make sure to pack plenty of lunch and a drink. You may even want to bring a small charcoal grill and roast hot dogs. There have been occasions where I have allowed a small toy.

3. Safety. No matter how many times you remind a child of the dangers of a 10″ ice hole, it does not seem sink in until they experience it first hand. My son took a step in the icy cold lake water during the cold winter months within the first minute of drilling the holes. Fortunately, he did not experience any harm other than wet feet and cold toes. A constant and watchful eye is a must.

A life jacket is a good idea for small children if they are walking around on the ice. Warm clothing is essential. Remember, while you are busy working getting everything lined up, a child is more apt to get cold much quicker than seems possible.

An extra pair of mittens is also a good idea. It is inevitable that every pair of mittens a child wears will some how end up wet.

4. Take pictures. Bring a camera. These photos will be treasured forever. You can only imagine how many times a child will want to see a picture of themselves holding their prized catch. It is a source of great pride and it keeps the adventure alive in their minds.

5. Equipment. The first and most important piece of equipment in my opinion is an ice Fishing rod with a reel. This will provide lots of entertainment -opening the bail, sending the lure down, jigging and reeling the fish up.  A ice shanty will help to block the wind during those cold winter days.  An auger is needed to drill the hole.  A bucket for the fish and a few bag style folding chairs are always useful too.  The equipment you bring will depend on how long of a trip you are planning

Remember, when you take a child fishing, it should be all about them.  Keep them happy and don’t over do it. When they are done – they are done.

Be patient and you will help them to develop a true interest in the sport of ice fishing and hopefully a life long hobby they can in turn share with their family.

It is always convenient if you are able to rent a waterfront vacation home when ice fishing with children.  If your children get cold and tired they can go back and get warm.  Many vacation homes offer discounted rates during the winter months with a minimal stay. Hess Lake Rentals in Newaygo Michigan offers ice fishing packages – which includes most of your equipment and accommodations. you can stay one day or more.  For more information on Hess Lake Rentals, visit www.HessLakeRentals.com .  Hess Lake fishing is known for Crappie and Blue Gills.

Don’t know how to ice fish?  Hess Lake Rentals offers “very inexpensive” ice fishing guide services and will teach you the basics of ice fishing.  An experienced guide will accompany you on your ice fishing experience.  This is a small price to pay to ensure great fishing success for future winter trips to come.  Rates vary from $75 to $120.00.  Contact Sherri for more information at 616-638-9384 or by email sherri@monaviewholdings.com .

Hopefully in the years to come, that family will ask to ice fish every winter.

See you out on the ice!

We are new immigrants in Toronto and looking for Skiing class for beginners. We’ve heard of Skyvalley near Toronto. Where is it located ?

Hi. Welcome to Toronto.
You can e:mail www.highparkskiclub.com or you can try calling them at (416) 537-SNOW. When you call press 2-1-0 to request a lesson. I believe they are free the lessons.
Good luck and have fun.

I am trying to get a mountain bike for this summers use. I am looking to ride on somewhat rough trails, and I am new to buying step of getting into Mountain Biking. I am told that buying is something you have to take some time with and look carefully. I am not trying to find a bike for $1000 plus, I would rather have someone let me in on some mountain bike secrets and help me find a decently priced bike. Any bike warehouses with cheap deals? Anything would help.

The biggest secret is getting the right size bike in the price range you can afford. Look for a hard tail bike will a decent shock that will lock out. If you want disk brakes or better components buy a bike that has them, it’s a lot cheaper then upgrading components later. Google " bike shops + your zip " and you will get a map with all of the local bike shops. Stay away from Walmart and other department store bikes. You can always find a good used bike on the local ebay or Craig’s list, just get a name brand.

Are there alternatives to hunting and killing when it comes to population control? In what ways can Hunting be cruel? What rights do you believe wild animals to have?

Hunting is the natural way to control populations. Deer were meant to be hunted, it’s their role in nature. Left to their own, they will reproduce, destroy vast acreage, destroy other animals habitats, destroy human food crops and create danger, disease and famine throughout the entire ecosystem.

No, there are no alternative, unless you want to remove man from the situation and bring back wolves. Man and wolf cannot coexist.

Hunting is not cruel at all, it’s perfectly natural.

Animals don’t have any rights. People who say they do do not understand what rights are.

I live in NJ an love too fish. I just bought a shimano ultra light Fishing pole an next week i will buy a reel too complement the pole. I am curious to know if a made the right chose in poles. And y do they call it a spinning rod?

P.S. I bought it because i perfer a light pole over a Rhyno medium pole i used too use.

To answer your first question, a Shakespeare Ugly Stik rod will handle anything you can possibly throw at it. Available in many different weights/lengths, it is one of the strongest, least expensive rods on the market.

It is called a spinning rod because it goes with a spinning, or open-faced reel. The spool and bail spin, taking up line.
