I love to ski, and I subscribed to ski magazine last year. Now that it’s time to re-subscribe, I’m curious about Skiing magazine. What is the difference in content between the two magazines? Do they have a slightly different focus?
Both magazines currently cater to roughly the same target demographic. I get a free subscription to Skiing but haven’t bought Ski in years.
Both magazines change their format to meet current trends quite often. Skiing’s current focus leans towards Big Mountain and Freestyle skiing, but quite often has some well written long articles about a certain resort or a skiing personality. They also tend to lean toward short, quick one-page pieces in the "Inside Line" and "Get Schooled" sections. This is good because if you are an anal-retentive mofo like me, you can tear out one of these pages and put it into a sheet protector and file it in a 3-ring binder for future reference. Skiing also has (usually) the final section devoted to the East. (The "East Scene") So us idiots in New England and the Mid-Atlantic can read something and say…"Wow. I can actually afford to go THERE and not have to buy a plane ticket and call off work for a week."
Backcountry magazine is another option of you are a telemarker/alpine touring skier.
N’East focuses on lots of sports, but does some seriously great articles and photo spreads on snowsports in the Northeast.

I’m 16 years old and I looove Mountain Biking. I do track, so I have a lot of endurance and I have good muscles from gymnastics, which will help me a lot with my biking. I bike a lot but I just do it for fun– I’d really like to compete in a race, but I’ve never done a biking race before. How can I start? Where can I find a local race? How do I figure out what ability level I should enter in? I know track helps a lot with training for biking, but what else can I do? We also weight train a lot–which is good because I don’t do gymnastics anymore. Any answers are greatly appreciated

Your local bike shop will have a list of local bike events. Your looking in the right time. the spring season is just kicking off. As for ability start in the Novis class. Its for people just like you. good luck.

I am not a hunter myself but I am very interested in the history of hunting and the activity itself.
I would be very grateful if anybody could tell me, in terms a layman could understand, how hunting is not purely a selfish pass-time but also benefits the natural environment and local communities?

Wildlife management officials, unlike most other governmental agencies, usually do their jobs well. They use hunting licenses and limits on hunters to control and maintain healthy game populations and provide for other wild species as well. If allowed to over-populate, many grazing species will cause irreparable damage to ecosystems and have ripple effects through the food chain leading to possible soil erosion and even the extinction of competing species.
Fees from hunting and fishing provide valuable funding for these wildlife programs.
In areas rich in game, entire economies are created that support and service these hunters. Many rural areas rely completely on the guides, outfitters, lodging and transportation around hunting and Fishing. In many areas, the only alternative economy to agriculture is the Hunting and fishing tourism economy.
The products of harvesting wild game provide healthy, valuable, alternative food sources than the mass produced supermarket food.
I am going stream Fishing for trout how do I keep the fish fresh while I continue to fish for more?
If I use a stringer to keep fish in the water what is commonly use to keep one end on the shore/bank?
You could go with a fish stringer or as Brandon pointed out a creel is a good go also. I’ve got an OLD wicker creel, think she be around 50 years plus (if thats anything at all) and I’ll do the same ie., use of leaves, moss, etc.. That along with fresh creek water they’ll keep nice and cool. As far as how stringer stays on shore, there’s usually a ring at the end of it ~ just put a strong twig through it and push it inta’ the ground. Common sense is goin’ ta’ be a factor, especially if ya’ have some nice size fish. Cabela’s link below has a real nice stringer if ya’ go that way…

No history of hunting is complete without mentioning the animals that helped humans survive and still are used for hunting. Today it is more for sport than survival, but for many it still provides food for the table.
In prehistoric times people hunted for food as well as fur and leather for clothing and hides used for shelter. As society became less nomadic, more agricultural it allowed for raising food in one place, but hunting didn’t go away.

History of hunting while gunpowder and firearms are relatively recent, bow and arrows, snares and traps have all been used to animals. Hunting dogs were developed to point and “set” game birds, allowing the handlers to toss a net over birds. Faster dogs were used to chase down game.
Falcons and even eagles have been used in the capacity of hunters. With the domestication of the horse, human had a means of speed to get alongside big game such as the bison in North America.
Early hunters also used methods of digging pits as a trap and running larger game off cliffs as a means of survival.
Today still hunting, stand hunting, stalking and driving are most common.
Still hunting is tracking animals when it’s known they’re in the area but not sighted.
Stand hunting is taking a position and waiting for the game to go by – often evidenced as deer stands and placed on pathways or near feeding areas.
Stalking is when the animal is spotted but out of range and the hunter moves within range while staying out of sight.
Driving is when one group of people deliberately makes noise which drives the animals in range or past armed hunters.
Dogs have long played an important part in finding or game.

I suspect that is why there is so much amazing fishing information available about this species.
Well enough with the background on the crappie so lets get to the teeth of this article and that is to give you some valuable crappie fishing tips about proper crappie gear,and crappie baits. To be consistent at catching the crappie you need to understand them and learn how to catch them. I have developed a list of fishing tips that I think will be very helpful when you plan on fishing for crappie.
#1: Crappie Gear Without the right fishing gear you will have a rough time catching crappie. You need to have a good long crappie rod with a sensitive tip, a graphite pole over 8ft long is better, but an old bamboo pole will work also. If you intend to get your self a a good graphite crappie pole you will need a matching spin cast reel that is rated for 4 to 6lb test line. If you are getting the bamboo pole it will have a crappie rig attached for you.
#2:- Crappie Baits: You can go in two directions, you can either use live or artificial baits. If you are new to crappie fishing it may be better to start out with live bait. You will have better success catching fish. You don’t want to get frustrated early and not give the sport a chance. If you you find you really like the sport after catching a few fish you can move on into learning how to use artificial baits. If you learn the art of fishing artificial crappie baits you crappie catches will be more consistent the more you refine your tactics.
Crappie fishing tips: If you are Fishing stained low visibility water select a chartreuse color plastic tail attached to a 1/32oz to 1/8oz jig with a 8 to 12 inch trailer hook attached to the jig’s hook. Use a number 6 to 8 hook. Put two spit shot about 18 inches above the hook. This allows the minnow to move freely, while be held stationary. Use a live crappie minnow by hooking them right behind the eyes in the back of the head. be careful not to go to deep or you will kill the minnow.
Tip#3:When you are fishing for crappie in rivers,lakes or streams that have moving water you will need to switch between live and artificial crappie baits depending on the crappies mood. Remember crappies are cold-blooded and the water controls their body temperature.Look for places in moving water where crappie might be hiding waiting for bait fish to swim by, you will have to put your bait right in front of their nose’s but boy will they really hit!
When crappie are sluggish it is because the temperature is out of their comfort zone. Kind of like your neighbor that doesn’t have air conditioning or is still using a wood burning stove when things get cold. They just don’t feel like doing anything until its right in their face!
Crappie Fishing Tips #4: When crappie are in their beds and starting to lay their eggs, you can find them by what is commonly called the “crappie bubble”. it is a bubble like wave going across the top of the shallow water … a ripple.This means there is allot of crappie in the area.
Tip#5: The crappie has a keen sense of smell so scenting your crappie jigs does make a difference. you can buy canned crappie scent at any tackle shop or purchase on-line. It’s a proven fact that you will catch more fish by scenting your crappie baits.

My husband wants to take the kids skiing but I am not much of a skier. Is there much to do that doesn’t involve Skiing/snowboarding? I’m looking for stuff to do with my kids but also on my own when they’re off in classes.
